Os ciganos vêm sofrendo uma perseguição como um grupo minoritário já a muitos séculos. O objetivo é fazê-los desaparecer. Contudo, vêm mostrando nesta história de perseguição sua capacidade de lidar com as mais diversas e cruéis formas da chamada “ciganofobia”, por vezes através do fortalecimento de suas tradições, costumes e comportamentos.
“Podemos imaginar que, ao longo da história, uma nova representação da minoria produz novas estratégias para a converter, cujo fracasso produz novas representações, e assim por diante… as estratégias de conversão da maioria reforçam a tendência para a autonomia e a identidade para a minoria…” (MOSCOVICI e PÉREZ, p.111).
Nunes (1996) destaca o fato de se tratar de um povo sem história documentada, caracterizados pela tradição oral, as designações regionais ou nacionais não conduzem a uma realidade definitiva, e o estereótipo criado por lendas populares e reforçado pelo cinema e por reportagens dos jornais, dificultam a compreensão desta minoria além de reforçarem o preconceito e desestabilizam processos de integração social.
Em matéria publicada ontem no Le Monde, o filantropo e especialista em finanças que dirige a Open Society Fundation George Soros, apela a União Européia (governos, sociedade civil, ONGs, empresas, partidos políticos etc.) a garantia do fim da intolerância e do ostracismo contra os ciganos. Soros lembra as recentes perseguições aos ciganos na Itália, onde tiveram acampamentos atacados e distruídos em Ponticelli, além da adoção da lei que autoriza colher as suas impressões digitais.
